Kate Breakey is a world-renowned, Australian-born artist who hand-colors beautiful still life photographs of nature. I'm particularly fascinated by her series of dead birds and other deceased creatures. The colors are so full of life and vibrance in contrast with the decaying subjects. As the Edelman Gallery states, "Breakey paints back the colors death has absorbed."
Kate meticulously memorializes the lives of these animals by photographing the subjects, then hand-painting each tiny detail with oil paints and colored pencils directly onto the image, giving new life to their crippled bodies. "I have constructed symmetrical shrines where they can have their memories and dreams in a kind of imaginary afterlife."
