The new semester is in full swing and it's time to set some new goals to ensure I make the most out of my last year!
// Fall In Love with Creating AgainSounds like a funny thing to say for someone who creates for a living. But when my passion turned into a profession, I started losing creative energy when every day was spent designing for other people – often times on projects that simply paid the bills rather than inspired me. While I still love what I do, I want to fall back in love with it. I don't exactly know yet how I'm going to make this goal happen, but I'm starting with a conscious shift in my attitude and expectations, and hoping the rest will follow.
// Learn to Work Well With OthersWhen it comes to group work, I'm a hyper Type A person. I immediately assume the leadership role and start controlling all aspects of the project (from designating roles, to assisting in the completion of those roles). My group partners are always grateful for my dedication, but it stresses the heck out of me. I have a difficult time of letting go and trusting others to do their part in completing a design I'd be proud to put my name on. I'm taking a branding design class this semester and it's ALL group work. I'm trying not to have a heart attack about it but rather go into it open for a growing experience that'll prepare me for going beyond my strictly independent freelance work and potentially into a design firm with other designers.
// Begin Developing My BrandNext semester I'll be creating my senior portfolio and along with that I'll need to create a cohesive brand for myself (logo, business card, resume design, and other self-promo material). Most other designers can agree with me: designing for yourself is hard. I suffer from design schizophrenia when it comes to my personal look-and-feel. So it's my goal this semester to get a jumpstart on developing a consistent brand that truly represents my work and who I am.
// Get More Involved With Extracurricular EventsParticularly, become a member of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) and take full advantage of the speakers and events they organize throughout the semester. There's so much knowledge and insight to be gleaned from other designers in the field. Last year, I attended Kate Bingaman Burt's creative lecture, and afterwards, was bursting at the seams with inspiration. I'm eager to learn from more artists and plan to get involved with any design events on campus to leave my final year at State full of as much information as possible.
// Pursue Personal Projects (for reals this time) *No matter how many times I put this on my list of goals, I still end up letting it fall by the wayside. A lack of personal projects is to blame for my dwindling creative sanity. So this semester, I'm going to make it a top priority to take care of my creative health and make time for personal projects.
